In doing so, we contribute at both a theoretical and practical level to major national strategy development.
Research Areas
Globalization and global governance issues form the context in which public policy decisions are made. GCCS approaches globalization and global governance issues from both a Chinese and global perspective. It seeks to study China’s engagement with international issues in a way that the international community can understand, with a focus on regional and global multilateralism, sustainable globalization, regional and international organizations, and international peace research.
GCCS aims to conduct rigorous research in all major streams in the field of international relations, including international political economy, military affairs and national security, international development, foreign policy analysis, international relations in the Asia region, marine geopolitics economic relations, and regional economic and political integration and governance. GCCS offers unique and insightful analysis of great power competition—including its geopolitical and geoeconomic aspects—and offers original insights into the ongoing shift in the global order.
GCCS aims to provide practical, actionable advice to policymakers and conduct policy-relevant research on issues most relevant to China’s public policy priorities. The Institute will conduct research on topics related to language and ethnicity, especially as they pertain to China’s socioeconomic development. We aim to integrate resources inside and outside the institute to conduct research and offer practical analysis on social governance, technological change and governance, quality economic growth, markets and rule of law, development and equity, climate change and environmental protection, anti-poverty measures and the expansion of the middle class, sustainable economic growth and social stability.
The Greater Bay Area is China’s historic and contemporary frontier in the decades’-long policy of Reform and Opening Up policies. This programme cluster hosts discussions and conducts research on the establishment of Guangdong’s Southern Common Market; conducts policy analysis of topics related to One Country, Two Systems; issues regarding global production networks, international trade platforms, international finance platforms, global cities and urbanization, and urban-rural integration.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digitization of the economy and of society, which has led to the growing application of artificial intelligence and big data in public policy and in commerce. There is a growing need to conduct research on issues relating to consumers’ and citizens’ rights relating to cybersecurity, the growing digital divide in the modern economy, artificial intelligence and social development, internet development and national security, the internet and social security, global governance of the internet, regulatory systems in the information age, the geopolitical aspects of internet governance, and the broader relationship between technology and international relations.
Combining policy analysis with research on sustainable development strategies for businesses, GCCS produces insights on topics relevant for both domestic and foreign-invested enterprises in China. Relevant topics include corporate social responsibility; market assessment, including research on market-oriented reforms; technology and society; political risk analysis in the context of geopolitics and globalization; internationalization of Chinese enterprises in an unpredictable and dynamic global security environment; big data, finance, and the intangible economy; transnational capital and corporate behaviour; dynamic interaction between state-owned and private enterprises; the development of small and medium-sized enterprises; and issues concerning foreign enterprises in China.
